Irish National Lottery just picked their Good Cause of the Year for 2018 – Children’s Grief Centre in Limerick. They received €35.000 in prize money and intend to use it to further expand their support to children who suffered loss from death, separation or divorce.
This non-profit organization was one of 36 finalists from all over Ireland who gathered at this year’s gala. This event honoured the work of good causes all over the country that used National Lottery funding to transform their local communities into a better place.
Minister for Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht Josepha Madigan explained they decided to reward Limerick organization this time around because its committed volunteers worked tirelessly to provide an oasis of calm for those who have lost loved ones.
Helen Culhane, who founded Children’s Grief Centre in 2009, was overjoyed after accepting this prestigious honour. She explained her organization helps children to find their own form of expression that goes beyond language – including clay, paint, sand and crayons.
Around 1.200 young people went through Children’s Grief Centre over the course of the last decade, and found a way to deal with their anger, guilt and sadness. In addition to offering unique one-to-one support sessions for kids, this charity is also supporting parents and guardians who are going through this painful journey with their young ones.
Children’s Grief Centre from Limerick wasn’t the only organization honoured at this year’s ceremony. Additional six winners picked up awards in different categories, including sport and recreation, community, heritage, arts and culture, health and Irish language. They all received €10.000 in prize money for their hard work this year.
